| | If You Inherited a Musical Instrument, Would You Restore It and Play It? | | I inherited a 16 hole Hohner chromatic harmonica, made in Germany. It looks very nice, but would need a bit of fixing up to be playable. I didn't have a 16 hole chromatic before this, so I'd love to try to play this one. But I'm not sure if it would be a good idea considering I also don't want to ruin an heirloom. It was my great grandfathers harmonica. He died before I was born, but he gave it to my uncle I guess. My uncle decided he could only play a few songs on it, and since I actually play harmonica, he should just give it to me. I'm normally a firm believer that musical instruments were meant to be played, so I'd really like to fix this one up.What are the pros and cons of restoring such a musical instrument? What would you opt for doing with it? | |
| | In Our World of International Trade... | | Why are some products still not available to all countries?I was looking at the Hohner harmonica section of their website today to see what collector's harmonicas I don't have yet and what I could obtain for not too much money. I decided to take a look at the children's harmonicas since I don't have any of those. It's kind of interesting because they tend to have less holes and interesting things about them that make them different. So I just thought I'd check them out and then find one.Of course, my desires drift towards what I cannot have... so I look and instantly see the "Melody Star" harmonica and I want it bad! It actually doesn't even have a description or really show it on the United States site. It's just that it is in the photo for the children's harmonicas section. So I go onto the German site, and see that it is offered there. The description is in German. Then I go online to look for it on Ebay, in stores etc. It seems to be as easily to obtain in Germany as a children's song flute is in the United States. Yet I cannot get one! This is going to drive me crazy. I didn't want the thing before because I never even knew about it. But now that I can't have it, I... | |
| | What kind of chromatic harmonica do you have? | | Do you like it?I have the Hohner Chromonica 270. I completely loved its great sound before. But now, I think I've ruined the reeds as it no longer plays quite a few of the holes (plus I had it sitting in a room that was too hot and haven't played it in a year previously). So now I'm thinking of getting a new one. I'm considering anything under $300. I'm sort of leaning towards the Chrometta currently. But I will definitely take all suggestions seriously. So what do you play with? | |

| | Harmonica Collectors! What's the Coolest Harmonica You Own? | | I think my coolest one would be the Hohner's 1920 Trumpet Call Re-Issue. It has these brass bells coming out the back and has an amazing sound. I rarely play it, it's more of a collector's item, but it is really neat.I probably don't have enough money to buy more harmonicas that are basically just collectors items. But I am awaiting a Suzuki pipe humming harmonica! I expect that one to be pretty cool!So what's your favorite harmonica? | |
